Michael Valgren del Astana Pro Team se hizo con la Victoria en la clásica Omloop Het Niewsblad, sobre un recorrido de 196 Km entre Gante y Ninove con 13 cotas y 8 tramos de pavé, que en su parte final era calcado al de la antigua versión a la Vuelta a Flandés. En segundo lugar llegaria Lukasz Wisniowski del Team Sky a 12″ y en tercero Sep Vanmarcke del EF Education First-Drapac
Michael Valoren, que estaba integrado en un grupo de escapados con Oliver Naesen del Ag2r La Mondiale , Greg Van Avermaet del BMC Racing Team , Oscar Gatto y Alexey Lutsenko del Astana , Sonny Colbrelli del Bahrain-Merida, Daniel Oss del Bora-Hansgrohe, Wout Van Aert del Verandas Willens-Crelan , Sep Vanmarcke del Team EF Education First-Drapac y Zdenek Stybar del Quick-Step Floors. Una fuga que se formó al inicio de Muur-Bosberg. Valgren vio como a falta de 3 Km la ventaja había caido a 25″, y tras ver los continuos marcajes de sus compañeros de fuga a falta de 2 Km arrancó y nadie se fue a por él, solo en el último kilómetro Vanmarcke hizo el intento de salir a por el danés.
La carrera comenzaba con un tiempo muy frío, que no quitó las ganas a los corredores de formar una fuga, la primera del día con 10 corredores a los cuales el pelotón dejó con cierta “libertad” hasta que el terreno empezara a ponerse duro. Los escapados llegaron a Leberg, con una renta algo por encima de los 4´, momento en el cual el gran grupo puso su marcha para no dejar que las diferencias crecieran mucho más. Todo transcurrió más o menos tranquilo hasta llegar a 50 Km de meta, momento en el que a la altura de Molenberg Van Avermaet empezó las hostilidades, a las que respondió Stybar. Tras coronar se formaría un grupo del que se quedaría el propio Van Avermaet. A partir de aquí fue el Español Iván García Cortina del Bahrain-Merida quien empezó a poner ritmo en el pelotón, mientras en el grupo de escapados se producían escarceos, en la aproximación al Muur-Bosberg García Cortina se iba al suelo cuando Vanmarcke salia del pelotón en plena ascensión a la capilla. A partir de aquí se desarrolló el desenlace final que fue el triunfo de Michael Valgren.
